California Department of Fair Employment and Housing against Cisco Systems On 30 June 2020 the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing filed a lawsuit[5] in San Jose against Cisco Systems and two of its employees on behalf of an employee who alleged that he had been discriminated against on account of him being from a lower caste than them.[6][7][8]

California’s lawsuit against Cisco alleges that the Dalit engineer received less pay and fewer opportunities and that the defendants retaliated against him when he opposed “unlawful practices, contrary to the traditional order between the Dalit and higher castes.”[9]

The Department notified Cisco of Doe’s complaint, investigated it,and decidedit had merit. Attempts at informal resolution were unsuccessful. The Department then filed a lawsuit in Santa Clara County Superior Court against Cisco and thetwo supervisors.[10]

On 2 March 2021 AIC approached the California Supreme Court to be admitted as an amicus curiae in the matter.[11][12][13][14]

"This lawsuit has also been named in groundbreaking actions including the first-in-the-nation ordinance passed by the Seattle City Council in February to include caste in its anti-discrimination laws."[15]

Cisco case “has given so many Dalits the courage to come forward with their stories about caste discrimination in education, the medical and tech industries.”[9]
