Re:History work

[edit]

Hi - Excellent work on the Wikiproject! I'll begin the final stage of work on Lothal before sending it to FAC on Sunday (planning on a Feb. 20 nomination).

Mauryan Empire: I suggest you add this on the expansion list. It'll interest you to know that before I worked on it, the entire article was "leeched" (99% copyvio) from another website. This article is my next history FA target.

Take care. Rama's Arrow 22:40, 11 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the Best User Page Project

[edit]

Let us try an experiment. Until further notice, the voting system will be open, using the method described in the Guidelines. This will make us understand how reliable the current system is and whether the project has a real possibility to expand into hundrends of users or not.

All users are encounaged to display the {{BestUserPage}} banner on their User Page.

All members all encouraged to display the {{BUP}} banner in their User Page, and also notify that the project has started.

We will refer to the votes for this first session as "March 2006" in the archive.

Attn: regarding Hindu

[edit]

Hello,

I wish to bring to your attention the recent changes made to the article Hindu by one user User:SocialWorker. This guy seems to be hell bent on writing criticism of Hindus in the article while there is already a separate article called Criticism of Hinduism. It seems this guy is not a Hindu but claims to know more about it than Hindus. He has already reverted a change that I made and I am afraid any attempt to make it less POV will be reverted by this guy to his version of NPOV which is rather biased, leading to a revert war. I request you to do the needful. Thank you. Rohitbd 18:47, 13 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Postal history

[edit]

If you want to do a history of the India Post, that would be History of the India Post. But given that Indian Postal Service is a stub, you have room to add 5,000 words of history before there is any need for a separate article. I would love to see somebody add it; don't have the references for that level of detail myself. Stan 13:31, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In articles about a country's postal service a section can be devoted to the history of that postal service, so there is little need for a new article History of the India Post when there is already an Indian Postal Service article started. This is the most appropriate place for details about organization, technology and history of the postal services in India. For an example have a look at Royal Mail which has a pretty decent history section. This history is quite distinct, though there are obviously overlaps, from the postal history section of Postage_stamps_and_postal_history_of_India which is generally regarded as an area of Philately as opposed to history. ww2censor 15:14, 16 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Deeptrivia, I remember I once talked to you about this and you said you wanted to wait and compile more edits. I think the time is now ripe, and there is strong call and support for you. Besides, admin tools will help your work on WP:HOI and Portal:Hinduism. Rama's Arrow 16:45, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Listen DT, your credentials are glowing enough presently to outshine the one error you made in your early days. That episode is not important, because there is so much proof as to your credibility, intensity and integrity. Once you get adminship, you can take time to grow into it, but I strongly advise you to take this up now, and don't worry about a thing. Your friends and a lot of others understand you and respect you. Rama's Arrow 16:58, 17 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, what Hipocrite says is true, and it is indeed good that you know it. The experienced wikipedia editors in questions are him and perhaps a couple others. It is a click issue. Hi - I think you should ask Siddiqui to provide an alternate source - given the region is a geographical/historical topic. If he doesn't respond, you can slam the article with a POV-disputed, factual accuracy disputed and Wikipedia:Check your facts, Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:Reliable sources.

Rest assured that if you move on this, you will be facing an edit war. You are doing the right thing by trying to get an admin to take the lead, but if no one helps, consider abstaining till early April.Rama's Arrow

In view of the absence of standard reference, I have marked the above article as unreferenced. --Bhadani 16:50, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

By the way, everyone should agree that any link from the WWW can not be a reference for wikipedia. --Bhadani 16:58, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are referring to my additions in Rajput and Sakastan pages:
They were accepted in Hinduism as Raj-put (children of the kings) caste of Kashatriyas after their support of Hindu crusade against Buddhism (see Decline And Fall Of Buddhism (in India)).
I have added the citation from Dr. Ambedkar website. The Rapjputs were Sakas, Kushans, Indo-Greeks and other groups that have invaded and settled in northern part of South Asia. They were actually accepted into Hinduism after they joined with Brahmins in suppression of Buddhism. This is what I have read. I am willing to hear the alternative versions of the same events with open mind.
Siddiqui 22:02, 20 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I have added more info in Sakastan page. I will try to get more information and acceptable sources. I am just surprised that not too many people aware of Sakasthan. It has been discussed many times in Usenet groups. I would request you to send me you opinion about Saksthan and Rajput caste being created to accomodate Sakas, Kushans, etc in Hinduism. Hi,

I just created an article on Jagadis Bose National Science Talent Search. It is also known as JBNSTS. How do I put a redirect when JBNSTS is searched for?

Also I wanted to know whether is there any way I can (automatically) keep track of number of new Wikipedia users I have welcomed?

One more thing, English Wikipedia is nearing 1 million articles. Is there anything planned for that occasion?

Hindi vocal samples

[edit]

Sorry it took me so long. I for some reason missed your comment that you were willing to split up the file into individual sounds, and I kept procrastinating because I didn't know the IPA symbols for them all, couldn't think of the best description to add, and couldn't get the software to accept the filename with the devanagari character, etc. Ideally the character would be the file name and the description would include the linguistic term for the sound such as velar plosive, etc. Anyway that recording is exactly what I was looking for, the only addition I would ask is the rest of the characters from the charts in Hindi, and then we can link each character to the sound file. Also some of the t's and d's were'nt as clearly enunciated as some of the others and the same for one of the aspirated characters. Sorry I can't be more specific as I can't play ogg on this computer. It would be better to have your name on the individual uploads anyway since they are your creation. Anyway, thanks for the work, and sorry for the long delay. - Taxman Talk 21:28, 21 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Your Suggestion Needed

[edit]

Hi,

A little while ago, I found that a person has posted this message on my talk page. I found it rather suspicious so I am consulting you. I haven't posted any personally identifiable information about any user, nor I plan to do now. However, the Important Message is accompanied by a one-liner message asking me to delete my real name and my photograph. Now, I don't think that this would be Wikipedia's policy. I have seen many users use their real names, and even Jimbo Wales does that. Furthermore I am not sure I can trust this guy because he has in the past wrongly accused me of doing things I didn't do and this time didn't even sign his name. The message itself looks like a warning of transgression. The user itself has been banned a few times and a lot of warnings are there in his page, and he has been accusing many people on wikipedia wrongly. So I thought I would take your opinion on whether it is OK to have real name and photo on Wikipedia (personally I don't have anything against written information about me as I have myself written everything and don't care about privacy issues).

If there is no policy, I really want to reccomend an admin to block this user as I can very well see from his contributions page that he goes around harrasing honest and innocent users all the time. -Ambuj Saxena (talk) 15:07, 25 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

I can see why you did it, but the problems are that, first, we don't use both a parent category and its children; Category:Indian philosophy is used instead of Category:Philosophy. Secondly, many articles are thus wrongly categorised; the template goes, for example, on articles about philosophers, schools, terms, etc. — these should be placed in their specialised categories, not in the general ones. Thirdly, editors can fail to notice the effect of placing the template, resulting in these mistakes about categories being made by going uncorrected.

If a category relates directly to the placing of a template, then fine, but otherwise editors should be able to decide in which categories an article belongs, rather than having it decided for them by a template. --Mel Etitis (Μελ Ετητης) 09:29, 28 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

To tell you, I have been more enthusiastic about it than you and it was the first thing I did after waking up (since when it was created I was sleeping). I am already thinking of doing something creative about it. I also planned to write a congratulatory message on Jimbo's talk page, but later thought that if everyone started doing it, it will become equivalent to spam. BTW, I didn't like the idea of showcasing the article so much. The real credit goes to Jimbo and his team, the admins and lastly (if space permits) contributors like us. I congratulate us all on this historic feat. Do you know, I was feeling it would be quite humiliating if the millionth article turned out to be a candidate for deletion or even worse, a vandal's vanity page.
