2024 United States Senate election in Delaware
The 2024 United States Senate election in Delaware will be held on November 5, 2024, to elect a member of the United States Senate to represent the state of Delaware . Primary elections took place on September 10, 2024.[ 1] Incumbent Democrat Tom Carper , who was re-elected with 60.0% of the vote in 2018 , has announced he will not seek re-election to a fifth term in office.[ 2]
On May 22, 2023, Carper announced his retirement, saying "if there was ever an opportune time to step aside and pass the torch to the next generation, it's coming, and it will be here on January 3, 2025."[ 2] The primary was cancelled since Lisa Blunt Rochester , a Democrat; Eric Hansen, a Republican ; and Michael Katz , a Delaware Independent were the only qualified candidates for their respective parties.[ 3]
This will be the first open race for this seat since 1970 . The last time Republicans won a U.S. Senate race in Delaware was in 1994 . If elected, Rochester will be both the first woman , and first African-American to serve as Senator for Delaware .
