Alanus University of Arts and Social Sciences (Alanus Hochschule für Kunst und Gesellschaft) is a state-accredited private university in Alfter (near Bonn), Germany, providing education in the arts and social sciences up to doctorate level.

History[edit]

The namesake Alanus ab Insulis (circa 1120–1202) is considered an early pioneer of anthroposophy.[1]

The university was founded as an anthroposophical art school in 1973. Since 2011 she has been cooperating with the Störker traditionally anthroposophical “Institute for Waldorf Education” in Mannheim.[2]

In cooperation with Rudolf Steiner University College in Oslo, it publishes the international academic journal Research on Steiner Education.

Portofolio[edit]

Alanus has offered accredited arts degrees since 2003 and other degrees since 2006. In 2010, the university was awarded institutional accreditation and the right to award doctorates by the German Council of Science and Humanities.[3]

The university offers around 20 degree programs and has around 2,000 students.[4] In addition to studying fine and performing arts as well as architecture, the private school also provides training in the fields of artistic therapies and therapy science as well as educational science and economics. It is a training center for people who practice pedagogical and curative education professions in anthroposophical institutions.[2]
